Calcium is the most plentiful mineral found in the human body. Calcium accounts for 1.5 to
2% of an adult's total body weight. The teeth and the bones contain the majority of the
body's calcium (about 99%). Calcium in these tissues is concentrated in the form of
calcium phosphate salts. Body tissues, blood and other body fluids contain the remaining
calcium (1%).
Some of the Functions of Calcium:
Calcium is one of the most important minerals for the growth, maintenance, and reproduction
of the human body. The bones in the human body incorporate calcium into their structure.
Bones, like other tissues in the body, are continually being reabsorbed and re-formed.
Teeth are also calcified tissues. They incorporate calcium in their structure in a manner
similar to bones. Calcium is essential for the formation of and maintenatnce of healthy
teeth.
Calcium has other functions in addition to maintaining healthy teeth and bones. Blood
coagulation, transmission of nerve impulses, muscle contraction and relaxation, normal
heart beat, stimulation of hormone secretion, activation of enzyme reactions, as well as
other functions all require small amaounts of calcium.
Not Enogh Calcium Can Cause Problems:
The following is the recommended daily allowances (RDAs) for calcium:
- infants (0 to 6 months):400 milligrams
- infants (6 months to 1 year):600 milligrams
- toddlers and preschoolers (1 to 5 years):800 milligrams
- school age (6 to 10 years):800 to 1200 milligrams
- adolescents (11 to 24 years):1200 to 1500 milligrams
- adult non pregnant women (25 to 50 years):1000 milligrams
- pregnant or lactating women: 1,200 milligrams
- postmenopausal women taking estrogen supplements: 1,000 milligrams
- postmenopausal women NOT taking estrogen supplements: 1,500 milligrams
- adult men (25 to 65 years): 1,000 milligrams
- all men and women that are older than 65 years: 1,500 milligrams
Deficiencies of magnesium and calcium can cause instability, pain and shrinking of
the joints with age. Calcium deficiencies can further lead to illness, espcially in women.
About 5 million American men and 25 million American women currently suffer from
Osteoporosis, with a dramatically increased risk after menopause. About 50% of women over
45 have or will have experienced Osteoporosis and bone loss.
Calcium performs many essential functions within the human body. This includes the
digestion of protein, fat, and energy prodution. It has also been reported that high
levels of calcium may aid weight loss. Calcium also appears to prevent fat cells from
becoming stored on the body. Diets that are low in calcium stimulate hormones that act
to preserve fat within the cells.
Benefits of Magnesium
Magnesium is also known as the "anti-stress mineral" and has been known to help improve
depression, promote cardiovascular health and keep teeth whiter. Additionally, magnesium
citrate mayhelp prevent kidney stones. Evidence suggests that it may also be helpful with
PMS symptoms.
Calcium and magnesium are best absorbed in an acidic medium, such as ascorbic acid, or
vitamin C. Most calcium supplements are not broken down and absorbed by the body. Instead
of being absorbed, they simply pass through the digestive tract. This is what makes
antacids with calcium carbonate ineffective in providing absorbable calcium for your body.
Calcium carbonate, otherwise known as chalk, is a poorly absorbed form of calcium. Calcium
citrate appears to be better absorbed and more effective against Osteoporosis than calcium
carbonate. To be effective, calcium supplements must be more bioavailable, enabling your
body to use what it is given. Vitamin C provides the perfect acidic environment to promote
optimal absorption of calcium and magnesium.
Vitamin D:
To properly absorb calcium, you also need a sufficient amount of vitamin D. Vitamin D is
both a vitamin and a hormone. Its a vitamin because your body cannot absorb calcium
without it; its a hormone because your body manufactures it in response to your skins
exposure to sunlight. People in northern climates make less of the vitamin than those in
warmer, sunnier regions
